Summer Care: A Guide for Seniors

With summers almost here, there are plenty of things to look forward to—ice cream sundaes, walks in the park, a trip to beach, and plenty more.
But it also comes with its own set of problems. This is especially true for senior individuals. From skin-related problems to the heat, if you’re not careful, summers can become a nightmare for your senior loved ones.
Here are a few things you can do to make sure your elderly loved one has a stress-free summer:

Keep Them Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water during the summers is essential. Make sure your senior loved one stays hydrated during the sweltering heat. If they have trouble drinking water, you can make lemonade to keep them cool.
Make sure to look out for signs of dehydration. These include:
§ Trouble urinating
§ Urine that is darker in color
§ Dry mouth
§ Exhaustion or sleeplessness
§ Extreme thirst
§ Headaches
§ Confusion
§ Lightheadedness
§ No tears whilst crying
Make sure they get drink at least eight glasses of water throughout the day. You can get them their own water bottle to ensure they keep hydrated.

Regular Exercise

To help your loved one remain active into their twilight years, make sure they exercise regularly. Walking everyday for 25 minutes and doing light exercises can help. Furthermore, exercising regularly will not only help them remain active, it will help get rid of all the toxins in their body.

Focus on Skincare

It’s not just hydration that needs to be taken care of. Skincare is just as important. During the summers, acne, heat rash and other skin-related problems can become a nightmare.
Make sure your loved one moisturizes their skin regularly and eats seasonal fruits and veggies to keep their skin looking flawless.

Skip Hot Showers

Hot showers during the winters are great for muscle relaxation. But during the summers, make sure they take a bath using warm to room temperature water. Cold showers are good for only when the temperatures rise.
This’ll also help keep them hydrated and prevent heat strokes.

Enroll Them Into A Senior Care Facility

If you have to deal with a busy schedule, enrolling your loved one into a senior living facility can take the load off your shoulders. Professionals know how to take care of everything. A professional will be able to cater to the needs of your senior loved one around-the-clock. They will get the attention they need. They will also be able to interact with others in the community.
